MyPedia Reader is essentially, an initiative by Pearson India Group. ‘MyPedia Reader Storybook: a book for children, by children’ was launched on the 29th of November, 2017. Adora Svitak, a child prodigy claims that the world is in dire need of child-like thinkers who would be capable of coming up with innovative and interesting ideas.
Boundaries are not an option for children as their imagination paves the way for bold and creative ideas. As they mature, they lose this creativity resulting in a lack of confidence. Adults should be more willing to accept the ideas that stem from these children, and hence, expectations should be inculcated in children from the very beginning so that they are able to push themselves beyond limits.
Another prodigy, Ken Robinson, believes that creativity is as important as literacy and is required for a nation to prosper and reach greater heights. Children are the storehouses of creativity and with the right amount of confidence and inspiration drawn from adults – parents and teachers alike – they can conquer milestones that are adequate for them in leaving a mark for themselves, from a young age itself.
MyPedia reader is a collection of the 42 stories written by young talents in the MyPedia Reader Creative Writing Contest 2017. The contest was aimed at improving the English language learning of these young minds by giving them a large platform to showcase their talents. It gives them an opportunity to become publicists at a tender age, by promoting peer relationships across nations.
Pearson Group essentially received a lot of entries, including one by an 8-year-old studying in the fourth standard. The three-panel jury that judged this contest included Santhini Govindan, Arundhati Venkatesh and Indira Ananthakrishnan, award-winning laureates in their fields. The stories published in this book are inspired by different cultures and geographies that have influenced these children to bring out their mettle.
An Insight into the MyPedia Reader
MyPedia gives children the opportunity to flourish their creative side and lets their imagination speak for themselves. As a voice to children, the leaders of the next generation, each published story is written exclusively by kids all the way till the illustrations of each novel. This is done in the endeavor to increase the children’s confidence and usher in a sense of aspiration that motivates other kids too to take the step forward and take up this mantle. Each publication is open to academic publication to spread the joy of reading to child, with an understandable viewpoint made for their mindset.
The inculcation of the habit of writing and illustration at a young age, while giving a door to a creative imagination, fosters an environment for the thriving and realization of creative imagination in the publication’s readers – other blooming and budding kids. Deeper thinking is influenced by prompts for critical thinking and creative writing that triggers your young one to practice the art of storytelling. While visual learners are engaged with comic strips – both complete and incomplete and the “scribble here” space in publications, all allowing a free flow of thought at the child’s ease along with vocabulary and creativity aided through fun games. Additional charts and checklists are also available in books to guide one’s child to write comprehensive stories. The above features are ingrained into each book to help foster all round development in your child.
Peer learning with children writing and sketching for other kids to learn from helps see a child’s perspective with a nation wide web of stories. The variation in each writer’s experiences set into the background of their geographical and cultural differences shines light on these children’s aspirations and issues faced by them.
