How To Protect Your Privacy While Using The Internet

Online privacy is the most important issue nowadays. As the use of the internet is growing rapidly, the risk of online identity theft and other cyber threats is also rising. Hackers, third-party companies, ransomware etc. can steal your online information and misuse it. Just imagine if your personal data like phone number, address, credit card details etc. went into wrong hands, how much damage they can cause? This has become a reality for a lot of people who have fallen victim to cyber crimes.

Well, we can’t stop using the internet but it is possible to be more careful while browsing stuff and protect your privacy to avoid any kind of mishappening. But how? How can you protect your privacy while using the internet?

Don’t worry, here are some ways which will help you to protect your privacy while browsing the internet. Below are some measures you can take to protect your online privacy. Keep these important things in mind while browsing the internet and also share it with your friends and loved ones.

Use VPN

The very first thing you can do is to use a good VPN service. VPN stands for Virtual Private Network and it lets you browse the internet anonymously. The VPN provides you a temporary IP address and hides your original one. So, once you turn on the VPN, it masks your real IP address and provides a new temporary IP address thus hiding your identity and location. A good VPN service would provide strong encryption and hence the data you transfer online cannot be read by a hacker, ISP, Govt. agencies. It prevents any other third party websites to track your online activities.

VPN has other users too like you can unblock the websites blocked/restricted at your location by changing the IP address to another location.

Create Strong Password

Next thing you can do is to set a strong password for your online accounts whether it is on the social media sites, financial website or Email accounts, you should always set a strong and difficult to guess the password. The best way to make a password strong is to use special characters between the words. And yeah, never use your name or surname in your password as it makes them easy to guess and weak.

Also, avoid using the same password for every website. If one of your accounts gets hacked then it will put others too at risk.

Disable Cookies

Another way to protect your privacy while using the internet is clear or block cookies. The websites you visit online add a small code to your computer to store your information. Some websites notify you that they are creating cookies when you visit them but some store your information without your consent. The worst thing is that some websites may even sell your information to the other companies. So, you may want to block the cookies. But in some cases, you should enable the cookies for the websites which you visit regularly and need to login to them so that you don’t have to enter the email Id or username again-n-again.

Update The Antivirus and Firewall

Antivirus and firewall help to prevent any virus, ransomware etc. attack on your system. These software are must have for everyone to secure their privacy and stay away from all kind of virus, spam, malware, ransomware and so on. There are many powerful Antivirus software available and you can also get some for free. Use a trusted and reputable Antivirus like Avast, AVG, Bitdefender, etc.

Do Not Link Accounts

Nowadays, websites allow you to log in with your other email account or social media account and link those account to that one. But you should not do this. Linking multiple accounts to a single website may create more risk. If the details of one of your accounts get compromised then others too will also be at risk. So, it is wise to stay away from linking your accounts.

Privacy Settings

Check the privacy settings of social accounts. Never share information with the public and set your privacy only restricted to the people whom you know and trust. There are also some other settings given by the respective websites to make your account more secure. The best thing to secure your account is to activate the two-step verification and set your mobile number to get the login code so that you can log in to your account after entering the code you get on your mobile as an SMS. Gmail, Facebook, Instagram etc. provide two-factor verification and you should activate it.

Email Security Is Important

Email security is another way to protect your privacy while using the internet. First of all, you should use the trusted email services which can actively classify spam links/ads like Gmail, Hotmail etc. Most of the viruses are spread from emails. Do not click links from unknown emails. You can copy and paste them into the browser to check the link URL.

If you receive an email and find it unusual then do not open it and never click the attachment because it may be a virus that you may accidentally activate. Also, ignore the emails which ask you for your bank account details or credit card details. This kind of emails may look like that they are from your respective banks but actually they are fake and if you provide them your account details then they can use the information in wrong way. Use common sense while using the internet. Stay safe!
